It Depends: Adapting systems across contexts

World IA Day Providence 2024
Aligned with World IA Day 2024's theme of "Context," this talk explores how a web experience is never just one experience: it's a compound of who's using it, on what device, in what environment, in what state of mind, with what level of ability and familiarity.
The talk makes the case that designing for a single user in ideal conditions means designing for a fiction, and that inclusive, adaptable systems require naming and accounting for the full range of contextual variation.
Grounded in real examples, it covers what context is, what kinds of context matter, and how to build that awareness into UX and IA practice before structural decisions are locked in.
